The problem is you did not convert the video to VOB when burning. You can try this expert DVD Creator tool, which is easy to use. The problem will be that the recorder can detect that you are trying to copy copyrighted material(DVD's).
Most DVD recorders will not let you copy DVD's, as you are finding out.
