If he paid for a program and installed it on your compute to record what you are typeing then you are SOL. NO ANTI-SPYWARE program will find it. I don't care what program it is. If he paid a lagit site for the program and installed it on your computer then he knows what your up too. But here are some way most of them work. Press CNTRL+ALT+SHIFT+X The X can be any letter between a-z. I know about this because I use programs like this at work to spy on my employees that I think might be moles and I have tested it out trying to find it after I have installed it and hide it with all the major players and the free-bies out there and nothing found it. This of course what the most updated ones. You can imz me if you have any other questions.
What kind of monitoring do you mean?
I use Nagios to monitor all the computers at my office. I can see details like ping response time, processor utilization, disk free space.. basically anything that can be reported via SNMP or RMON.

If you are worried about it, a firewall should tell you when a program tries to access the internet. Windows comes with one, and there are third party ones you can download.

First, if you ever receive ANY type of attachment from someone that you don't know and trust, do NOT open the attachment!
Second, most of the "bad guys" in the computer world realize that people have learned to not open strange attachments, so they have created ways of embedding their malicious code (viruses / spyware) into the actual body or other parts of an e-mail without needing to make an attachment. So if you open one of the e-mails with the nasty little code you can instantly have the surprises installed on your computer without you even knowing about it.
Even if you just preview the message without fully opening you can still get one of these "mail bombs" on you machine.
Best practice..
Don't open (or even preview) messages from people or organizations that you do not know and trust. Just delete it, and make sure to empty your deleted items afterward.

Get the Window Watcher from Karenware. Her site is an awesome resource for free and powerful software that will not install and ads or spyware. With Window Watcher, you can see what hidden windows are running. I believe there is a process watcher on her site too. Task Manager is built into Windows. You should not have to install a new one.
To run Task Manager from the command-line:
Click Start -> Run ->taskmgr.exe
Here is what I use, You can see their screen, all typing. It logs it, works on the network or through internet, and they don't have to know you have it, or you can send messages, run and close programs, etc.
Specifically the actvity monitor. I think the logger for "parents" is just for logs, and not real time.

The software he recommends is Spector Pro by Spectorsoft. They make a variety of products to monitor both PC and Mac computers. They are by far the best monitoring product available and I recommend them highly.

Besides looking for icons or in your program groups or control panel you can run a search on your hard drive for the EXE. You should be able to find the file name from their web site or one of the boards out there.
